Oaky caramel complemented by a salty lime note – perhaps this is what is termed "rancio"? It's somewhat off-putting on its own, but it's the ideal flavor profile for mixing with DiSaronno (my go-to "fixer" for drinks). I've observed that it actually improves with air exposure, revealing more of the raisin-like notes that are initially hidden behind the sharpness.

About this bottle
Martell's VSOP Medaillon Cognac is composed of eaux-de-vie aged between four and seven years, with an average age closer to six years. The blend incorporates grapes from four of the six Cognac growing regions, with a particular focus on the Fins Bois and Petite Champagne areas. This contrasts with many other Martell offerings that heavily feature the Borderies region. Note: This bottling is being replaced by Martell VSOP Aged in Red Barrels.

Smooth and mellow, with prominent notes of citrus and star anise. It has a long, warm, oaky finish. Established in 1831, it is owned by the period company Ricard. Jean Martell began distilling in 1715.
A little sharp at first. It needs time to open up. Oak and raisins. Sweet caramel flavor. It's certainly not XO quality but it's not bad either.
Spicy and a bit of a spirit taste initially. Pepper-filled aftertaste. Nothing remarkable, just adequate.
Slightly too much raisin or maple syrup sweetness. Otherwise, nice and smooth.
Martell Napoleon. A faint grape, old smell. Musty and faint. Slightly bitter after some sweetness. Smooth swallow, mild flavor.
