D'USSÉ VSOP Cognac

My first experience with Cognac. I wasn't sure what to anticipate, and it took about five tastings to fully grasp it. Initially, it presents flavors familiar to seasoned whiskey drinkers, with an elusive sweetness followed by a strong oak note. Subsequently, it transitions into a finish with a dark chocolate-like bitterness that lingers on the front palate. After several attempts, I've concluded that this is likely what a hybrid of whiskey and semi-dry red wine would taste like. I detect many notes similar to a sweeter Cabernet, but with a more pronounced oak and alcohol presence. The sweet elements seem to lean towards red grape characteristics. I definitely like it overall and plan to explore more Cognacs.

Aroma of fruit, fresh grapes, apples, and berries. Exceptionally smooth on the palate, one of the most approachable spirits I've ever had. Black cherry and honey are the dominant flavors. It begins dry and becomes sweeter. The finish is surprisingly long but lacks a distinct flavor beyond general fruitiness. I was hesitant to purchase due to the average reviews, but I genuinely enjoy it. It may not be highly complex, but it's incredibly tasty and evokes a sense of sophistication, like something one might drink after a duel.

Smell: dried fruit, raisins, dried cherries, fruity sweetness, wood. Taste: spicy, woody, sweet, yet also dry, finishing dry and spicy. Delightful! Spice mellows and sweetness grows after it sits for a bit. My initial experience with cognac. I acquired this for making sidecars, but I can picture enjoying cognac occasionally. It bears resemblance to Highland Park 12 year or Bunnahabhain in certain aspects. Similar to that sherry-infused oaky spicy sweetness. I approve. Upon a second tasting, I detect an amaretto sweetness, almost like cherry cola flavors. Fantastic!

A refined VSOP Cognac from Chateau de Cognac, made with Ugni Blanc grapes and aged at least 4 years before bottling at 40% ABV. It begins with aromas of cooked and dried fruits, wood, nuts, herbs, and spices. The mid-palate offers hints of golden raisin, banana cream, caramel, and Crème brûlée, leading to a swift, balanced finish with notes of oak, almond, walnut, and cinnamon. (September / October 2025)

Absolutely delicious! It tastes of baking chocolate, honeycomb, some woody/nutty notes, and finishes rich and smooth. The only downside is the $60 price tag. There were certainly less expensive options available, but this will definitely be a permanent fixture on my shelf! 🙂

This marks my initial experience with cognac and brandy. However, I feel on top of the world. Oak dominates initially. It's sweet, full-bodied, and rich with cherry, vanilla, and perhaps strawberry. The sweetness continues to the end, with a warm yet fruity conclusion that lingers.
