L'aperitivo Nonino

Italian, 21% alcohol by volume. Appears golden yellow with a sweet, herbal aroma, light floral citrus notes, recalling Suze. On the palate, it's thin, dry, then lightly sweet with floral herbal bitterness. The finish is somewhat short, carrying a slight chemical, medicinal flavor. In summary, it's light, subtly sweet and herbal, with a trace of bitterness and citrus. It doesn't possess the richness and boldness of Suze, but it echoes that gentian herbal profile. However, considering its cost of $65, superior alpine amari are available. It mixes excellently in the spritz cocktail suggested on the label: two parts Nonino, 1 part sparkling wine, lemon juice, served over ice in a wine glass. It lacks the bitter depth that enhances other spritzes.

Opened indefinitely. Smell: Wilted blossoms, dried lemon peel (lacking brightness). Flavor: A 50/50 mix of Montenegro and amaro nonino. Sugary lemon drops, tart rhubarb, Aperol, and white tea.

Gentle, not too sweet, with notes of mandarin compote and cloves. A subtle honey emerges with water, and there's a slightly medicinal quality. It's less intense than the standard amaro. Quite pleasant.
