Galliano L'Autentico

Exploring my amaro collection and revisiting some well-known ones. This was unavoidable in the 80s. Ever had a Harvey Wallbanger? It always served as a flavoring component, not something to be sipped neat (at least not more than once). Yet, here I am... Ugh. Sweet. The dominant tastes are fennel and anise, overly sweet vanilla, and a hint of something like diluted furniture polish. This is truly awful. However, a little in a highball can add an interesting flavor. But just a tiny bit, as you really don't want to taste it on its own. Everything has its purpose. Galliano's purpose isn't in a tasting glass.

I appreciate Galliano, even if it feels like it only does one thing well for me. I acquired this a while ago for my bar to make a Harvey Wallbanger, and its flavor pairs wonderfully with vodka and orange juice. While I'd only used it for that until recently, it can be used in many drinks, such as a Galliano sour and Hot Shot. It takes some adjustment to taste its flavor with other components. I enjoy the anise and vanilla notes and how they combine with other elements. Although other liqueurs exist, I prefer this one. Enjoy.

The aroma is very herbal, with notes of juniper, mint, anise, flowers, and numerous other scents I can't pinpoint, similar to components of Fernet and Chartreuse. The palate is relatively sweet with a slight warmth. Flavors are dominated by anise, but also include mint, juniper, and again, many unidentified elements. The finish lingers with anise, having a slightly sharp quality akin to absinthe, but much milder.

A potent, Italian herbal cordial. It begins aromatically with notes of fruit, herbs, and spices. Its rich and full character develops notes of citrus and ginger, leading to a prolonged and bold conclusion with hints of vanilla, anise, and peppermint. November 2016 / May / September 2017

1.22.22 Served: Neat, in a flute. Bottle Opened: Same Day Aroma: vanilla transitioning to anise. Flavor: Begins with vanilla, moves to caramel in the middle, and finishes with licorice. Quite straightforward. Medium sweetness and body.

I detect herbal notes. I believe it's miscategorized; it tastes like gin to my experienced palate.
