That's when the vineyards of Derbent received tax breaks for distilling spirits, and cognac production in the region rapidly increased. The main production came from the Derbent Winery, which was equipped with advanced equipment even then. Later, in 1960, several independent wineries joined it, and the plant was renamed the Derbent Cognac Plant. At the end of the 20th century, despite the widespread uprooting of vineyards due to the war on drunkenness, many vineyards in Derbent were saved.
