Kōloa Hawaiian Kaua'i Coffee Rum

Continuing Koloa Tasting with distiller Bob Gunter (Tasted 6th) According to the Distiller: Their standard white rum infused with cold brew coffee. 3.23.22 Served: Neat, Flute Bottle Opened: Same Day Last tasted: Cacao Rum Aroma: Cold Brew and chocolate. Flavor: Old coffee, baking cocoa. Very cocoa-forward coffee flavor, but unfortunately has the aftertaste of day-old hotel coffee. Worth trying in a mixed drink, but not enjoyable on its own.

I'm not a frequent rum drinker, but I've heard this has won awards, and it lived up to expectations! Everything about it signifies coffee. From its rich, dark brown color to the tasteful black and gold branding. Not to mention the aroma - coffee. It's a bit sweet if consumed in large amounts, but not syrupy like many other flavored spirits.

From the bottle, this has a coffee & toffee aroma and a noticeable sweetness. It tastes sweet and has a nice, oily mouthfeel. I'm detecting a Kahlua-like coffee flavor. Coffee flavor is present but in a candy form. It might be a bit too sweet served straight for some but should be perfect as a mixer. Rating based on neat sipping.

To begin, this is not a typical rum for sipping. It's sweet and sugary. That said, it possesses a strong roasted coffee flavor with chocolate undertones. It would be suitable for mixing but can also be enjoyed on its own as a dessert beverage. Definitely leans more towards a liqueur than a sipping rum.

I generally dislike flavored rums because they tend to be excessively sweet and taste artificial. This one offers a wonderfully smooth, rich, and natural coffee flavor. The quality of the ingredients is evident. It's the finest coffee liqueur I've ever encountered.

It tastes sweet and chocolatey with a hint of coffee astringency. It's more of a dark chocolate liqueur. It's tasty, but simple. The Kahlua icing sugar flavor is absent. It isn't really meant for sipping, but it has a good, robust flavor.
