Kilchoman New Spirit Bramble Liqueur

Appearance: Dark, nearly opaque, with a crimson hue fading to clear red at the edges—much like a merlot. Perfectly clear with no visible particles. Aroma: Wood smoke, reminiscent of a fireplace or cabin stove burning wood. The faintest trace of something fruity. Palate and Texture: A pleasant combination of wood smoke and berry juice. It's sweet with some tartness and not at all syrupy—similar to cranberry juice. The aftertaste is smoky and slightly woody, with the berry flavor lingering subtly. The texture is crisp and light. This liqueur is a blend of new-make spirit from Kilchoman, bramble berries (blackberries), and honey. It took me a bit by surprise, as I anticipated a heavily berry-scented aroma, but instead, it is as intensely smoky as any of the Kilchoman whiskies, with very little berry aroma. The texture was also unexpected, as I thought it would be thick and syrupy, or at least rich like a PX sherry or port wine; however, it is actually quite crisp and light. It's an intriguing liqueur, though likely not suited for all palates. It's not unpleasant at all, but the fusion of smoke and berries is unusual and requires some adjustment. Initially, I didn't favor it much, but after two small glasses, I grew accustomed to the taste, and I believe I will occasionally enjoy a measure of this in place of a fortified wine (though I doubt I would purchase a second bottle). Enjoyable neat, and also good served over ice. It could be used as a substitute for cassis in cocktails, adding an interesting smoky note—in fact, it might make an exceptional tequila sunrise! Finish: Short to medium length. The sweetness gradually fades, allowing the smoke to build and take over, accompanied by an earthy malt flavor. Conclusion: This beverage is not for everyone. Individuals unaccustomed to peaty and smoky Scotch may dislike it, while many peat enthusiasts might object to the sweetness. Personally, I enjoy the blend of flavors! It demonstrates the diverse and excellent products that whisky distilleries can create!
