Three stars signifies a decent, unremarkable spirit suitable for a budget-friendly everyday pour. Four stars indicates something exceptional, either great value or worth the splurge. Five stars denotes the absolute best, a spirit you'd treasure even if it's expensive. With that in mind, this Beam Pre-Prohibition might be approaching a four-star level. It's impressive that Beam can produce such a robust and traditional flavor at this price point. When enjoying rye, the rye character should be prominent, and it is here, presented in a classic American, not Canadian, style. Even if it's not your usual rye, it's definitely worth trying out to potentially save some money.

It doesn't leave many legs; a few light streaks remain inside the glass. It has an amber-gold appearance. The aroma to me is dominated by spicy herbs: rye (obviously), black pepper, fennel, star anise, black licorice. It possesses a very sharp, bitter scent. There's an almost medicinal quality. A richness reminiscent of finished wood or lacquer concludes the aroma. The flavor is heavy and presents dusty cinnamon immediately. Sawdust and wood spice are present. Some caramel and toffee slightly soften the sharp notes. The finish is where this Rye truly shines: abundant cinnamon and black pepper spice. Wood spice, sawdust, and seeded rye bread are noticeable. There's an intriguing candied orange and potpourri, along with cigar ash. This is a very dependable, well-priced rye that functions excellently in any rye cocktail, and also stands well on its own, if rye is your preference.

Nose: Abundant peppery rye and butterscotch. Strawberry and cherry Laffy Taffy emerge after being coated by a light layer of vanilla and barrel char. Palate: Sweet caramel and a strong black pepper taste come first. The vanilla and barrel char are more prominent, with cherry Laffy Taffy in the background. Finish: It lingers for a medium duration. Soft tannins and a touch of spearmint make you want another sip. Overall: One of the most cost-effective whiskeys available. It's inexpensive yet offers significant character on its own and performs well in cocktails. It's a shame this has been discontinued in favor of the lesser 80 Proof Rye. If you encounter this while shopping, definitely consider buying a bottle or two before they vanish completely. Hopefully, it will return soon.

However, it lacks the punch and acidity needed for cocktails, disappearing into them. Despite being labeled "pre-prohibition" style, it feels more like a "prohibition style" approach – diluting a decent spirit to increase volume, which is disappointing given the nice lingering taste. I dare you to guess it's rye in a blind test.

At first taste, the sweet bread comes through, but it gradually gives way to a flavor more like rye/wheat bread. It has an okay quality, and the caramel hint is present. The rye spice appears later. The finish, although initially sweet, is dry and typical for a rye whiskey. There's a mild, not unpleasant burn at the end. It's not very complex, but nothing is bad about it. For the price, it's a very good rye. I drink it straight and really like it, although I prefer the George Dickel rye slightly more.

It is a wonderful experience served neat, and I am curious about its potential in a manhattan.
