Gooderham & Worts 49 Wellington is a 19-year-old whisky named in tribute to Toronto's distinctive red-bricked Flatiron Building at 49 Wellington Street, which served as Gooderham & Worts' headquarters for sixty years. This whisky is a blend of rye malt, barley malt, red winter wheat, corn, and unmalted rye, aged in red oak. An additional six years were spent in oak barrels fitted with red oak inserts. A small quantity of Wiser’s Red Letter from 2014 is also included in the blend. It was released in 2019 as part of the Corby Craft Rare Range Series.

Red oak and red wheat impart a lovely finish full of spice and sweetness. I had a sample and then decided to purchase a full bottle. A wise decision. The age and the wheat combine soft wheat and wood spice. The finish is medium to long, slightly warming and spicy. The aroma is sweet and oaky; it's Canadian but so well-balanced with no noticeable raw alcohol notes despite being 49% ABV. Simply delicious.
Impressive stuff. Nose: Maple syrup, cream cheese, pineapple, salted caramel, cherries, apricots, vanilla, guava, peaches, almonds, cinnamon, marshmallows. Palate: Vanilla, cherries, cloves, nutmeg, pepper, milk chocolate, cashews, hazelnuts. Finish: Nutella, blood oranges, hazelnuts, walnuts, nutmeg, baking rye spices.
Notes of sweet maple syrup with citrus zest. The body is brighter and zestier than most Canadians, with more depth and flavors like pear, orange marmalade, and toasted marshmallow. The finish has notes of glazed pecans, pear, and grass.
