1.23.22 Served: Neat, in a flute Bottle Opened: One month prior The assignment: Smells like black truffle-infused cynar. Tastes like a spicier version of a Ricola cough drop. Aroma: Deep notes of cola and earth, similar to the scent profile of Cynar or Averna. This evolves into a distinctly pungent, spicy, and savory black truffle aroma. After my nose grew accustomed (oops!), the aroma completely shifted, now smelling of vanilla extract and chocolate waffle cones/chocolate wafers (baked notes, not coated), with a finish reminiscent of turpentine. Flavor: A light sweetness and body, which aligns with claims of lower sugar content. Medium-light bitterness. Exhaling after a sip gives the impression of smelling a men's cologne with leather and tobacco notes. The overall taste is very much like a yellow Ricola cough drop. The finish is vibrant, featuring a blend of spice similar to Calabrian chili (think spicy cured meats, much milder than Latin American chilies) and peppermint. I need to re-evaluate this one. I may have fatigued my olfactory senses too much by sniffing excessively before actually tasting. It's certainly unique among amaros I've encountered due to the truffle-forward nose.
