Catoctin Creek Ragnarök Rye (2022 Release)

This arrived courtesy of a pal who presents as calm but is a death metal fan deep down. He's the only person I know who punched a wall and broke his hand during residency. A truly formidable individual. A medium amber with orangey tones. It looks thin. The nose explodes with butterscotch and bread, reminiscent of leavened dough. The dough scent gives way to a bit of yeasty funk. Next, herbs and spices emerge – bay leaf, thyme, a touch of eucalyptus. There's also earthy clay, dried cherry, and a hint of tobacco. It's youthful and grain-forward, appearing about 2 years old, though that's just a guess. It has a more coating mouthfeel than its proof and appearance suggest. The palate is a bit hot, but not unpleasant. Following the young yeast funk and doughy rye notes, the spice arrives – perhaps even a hint of pumpkin spice latte. Plenty of light caramel and a bit of fresh-cut apple sweeten it up. The finish is reminiscent of hot buttered rum or kettle corn. Does it evoke GWAR? I can't say. Frankly, my knowledge of GWAR comes from the movie Empire Records about 20 years ago. That's a film I can't stand now and might show flaws from my past self. There's likely a touch of hormonal, teen spirit here – maybe that's where the nipple piercings, costumes, and death metal come in? Like sweaty socks and greasy faces, this just needs more time. About 10 years. And on that note, I'm sure I would have called the police on my past self and will take a moment to appreciate the good fortune that has brought me this far...

The cherrywood aroma is immediate, lending a fruity, cobbler-like character. Quite flavorful, though light in body. Curiously, the rye spice is almost overshadowed by the cherry and sweetness from the sugar maple barrels, appearing only near the start of a lengthy finish. Notes of baking spices, candied nuts, cinnamon toast, and brown bread persist throughout. A very approachable Rye that also serves as an excellent conversation starter for your bar.
