Arran Sherry Cask "The Bodega"

I believe this is my first encounter with an Arran bottle featuring their new design. It's no secret that this distillery is among my favorites, but I'd been hesitant about these new bottles due to their unappealing marketing, at least to me. However, that has no bearing on the liquid itself. I was keen to see if they'd lost their touch or if Arran remained exceptional. Fortunately for us fans, it's the latter. Bottled at cask strength 55.8% ABV, this expression has been matured in sherry casks and is non-chill filtered, displaying a lovely copper color. The nose presents an incredibly impressive mocha aroma, followed by tiramisu, coffee, figs, and hazelnut. After an initial taste, it evolved into a profound dark chocolate experience, with notes of cocoa and "brigadeiros" desserts. The palate is fantastic. Tiramisu is immediate, complete with creaminess. Coffee beans and chocolate are present, along with thick wafer cookies, hazelnut, sawdust, and vanilla cream. The finish perfectly complements a very solid, balanced dram, featuring dark chocolate and some sulfuric notes. Hazelnut and general nuttiness are prominent, along with bitter tobacco. In conclusion, this is undoubtedly a very fine single malt. The sherry influence is beautifully presented, and the Arran spirit is an excellent vessel for sherry profiles. Balance is key here; all elements of this whisky are in perfect harmony. My score for this remarkable dram is 92 out of 100.

55.8%, Cask Strength, Non Chill Filtered, no added colour Nose: cranberries, spices like cinnamon and star anise, oak and cherry licorice candy - reminiscent of certain Canadian candies from the same maker. Palate: oak, vanilla, cinnamon, cherries leaning towards maraschino, hazelnuts and sherry. Medium to medium-short finish with more cherries and perhaps a touch of plum. Regrettably, I'm among the few who struggle to connect with Arran whiskies; in fact, I've also found it challenging to find a 100% sherry-matured whisky that truly appeals to me, as I generally prefer bourbon-matured and peated spirits. That said, this Arran comes closest to satisfying my interest in both Arran and sherry-influenced single malts. It's an approachable, straightforward cask strength whisky. While not an intense sherry bomb, it's quite enjoyable. Adding water didn't improve it for me, which is acceptable. It's not a complex spirit, but its quality, drinkability, and value compensate for that. I believe the nutty character of the Arran spirit benefits from the sherry influence. I'm eager to revisit the port-finished Arran I have saved to recall its profile and how it compares. I highly recommend trying this one if you haven't already.

Nose: Initially bold and assertive with intense sherry influence—dark chocolate, raisins, and figs are prominent. As it airs, subtle notes of orange peel, cinnamon, and toasted oak appear, revealing complexity beneath the strong initial impression. Palate: The entry is intense and full-bodied, delivering waves of dried fruits, black cherry, and Christmas cake spices. Mid-palate shows sophisticated layers of leather, tobacco, and subtle nuttiness. The fresh sherry cask influence is unmistakable, providing exceptional depth and balance despite the high alcohol content. Finish: Long and warming, with lasting notes of dark chocolate, oak spice, and a pleasant tannic structure that encourages contemplation. Overall Assessment: This Arran Sherry Cask Strength exemplifies masterful cask selection and maturation. The fresh sherry casks contribute remarkable complexity without overpowering the spirit's inherent character. While it demands respect for its strength, it rewards patience and proper aeration with an evolving, sophisticated profile that showcases Arran's commitment to quality craftsmanship. Final Score: 90/100 Exceptional single malt that offers outstanding value and complexity for sherry cask enthusiasts.

Nose: Warm oak, withered dark fruits, deep orange, dark chocolate. A hint of coffee. A wonderfully smooth aroma that, while not inherently warming, creates a sense of inner warmth. Like entering a home heated by a fire after being out in the winter chill, this nose is rich and satisfying. Palate: Significant sherry impact with dense Christmas spices and dark fruit surging forward over silky caramel. The characteristic Arran ginger tingle is present, while fig and dates fill the mouth with creamy vanilla and chocolate notes. It’s bold, rich, and unexpectedly dry. Finish: Moderate. A succulent warmth remains at the back of the throat; a flavor akin to strawberry jam lingers, offering a cool counterpoint to the rich palate. Praline and chocolate fade quickly, leaving warmth behind. I just finished an Aberlour A'bunadh. For a cask-strength sherry bomb, this is more pleasant and offers more invigorating flavors. The essential Arran spirit shines through here, and the finish and artistry of this non-age-statement release demonstrate the significant quality and sophistication that Arran seems to apply to all their fine spirits. The more I reflect on it, the more this bottle reminds me of the Arran 18. The 18 is rich and profound, while this one is livelier and more assertive. Both, however, are equally delicious. Arran is absolutely fantastic. Absolutely. Fantastic.

On initial smelling, the high alcohol content gives a vodka-like impression for a moment, but it's quickly followed by the aroma of dried fruits and tart raisins. The palate delivered a significant surprise with a smooth, oily, and dense texture, especially considering the 55.8% ABV. A classic sherry flavor emerges, followed by a powerful impact that lower-proof whiskies can't deliver. The flavors expand considerably with a few drops of water. This offers excellent value.

Matured in 1st and 2nd fill sherry casks. A classic sherry bomb. This tied for 4th place out of the six whiskies tasted, receiving 5 out of 101 votes for favorite.
