Milam & Greene Port Finished Rye

A gift from a friend who is taking a break from whisky. This isn't something I would have likely chosen myself, so let's explore: The nose initially presents spearmint/wintergreen, black tea, and rye spice, but a subtle fruitiness, likely from the port finish, is detectable. Orange zest and berry notes are present. However, the overall aroma is somewhat subdued, unfortunately. Frankly, the palate initially resembles many young MGP ryes: herbal tea, honey, lemongrass, white pepper, and mint. The lower proof seems to hinder the flavors from fully expressing themselves, resulting in a somewhat flat profile. The finish is where things become more intriguing and is undoubtedly the most enjoyable aspect. Alongside the palate's flavors, notes of cinnamon, caramel, clove, fig, hazelnut, and blackberry emerge. The duration is rather brief. The mouthfeel is on the thicker side of medium-bodied, fitting the profile well. Well, this isn't a resounding success, nor is it a complete failure. It's more of an "unremarkable" experience. I had higher expectations for the port finish than what was delivered. While significant flaws are hard to pinpoint (which is good for MGP), it's also difficult to find anything truly remarkable that would motivate a repurchase. At $43, the price is certainly not excessive, but I would likely opt for something richer and more potent, even if it cost a bit more. So-so?

Nose - The aroma is sharp. I detect a considerable amount of fresh raspberry and musty wood upon the initial smell. Anise and white pepper notes are in the background. A pleasant nose, and unlike what I typically expect from MGP rye (dill, vanilla, allspice). Taste - Upon entry, this does not taste like rye at all, but rather like a high-rye bourbon. I perceive a dusty sweet corn flavor followed by strawberry jam, currants similar to those found in scones, some raisins, and oak. It's somewhat drying and has a few intense spots, but overall, it's a good sip. Finish - The finish is medium to long with notes of wood, jelly, and white pepper. A rather good balance. Overall - This is a pleasant surprise. It truly demonstrates the potential of a well-executed port-finished rye. The finish imparts a lovely jamminess. The port seems to contribute an aged, mustier character, reminiscent of certain Wild Turkey expressions, to what might otherwise be a younger rye. It strongly reminds me of some recently tasted Highwest Rye expressions, or it could serve as a great substitute for Midwinter Night's Dram if unavailable. I enjoyed this and am eager to use it in a Manhattan cocktail.

The label suggests: "When facing down a great bear, don't play dead. Rather, make light of the situation, keep eye contact and pour a drink for two." This is a Milam & Greene, sourced MGP/Ross & Squibb straight rye, 47% ABV, finished in port barrels in Texas. It has a rose-golden hue and leaves thick legs in the glass. The nose presents floral grape and berry notes, with a hint of vanilla and ethanol spice. The palate offers sweet stone fruit, burnt sugar, and vanilla oak, followed by a grassy dry spice and mint tingle, with a touch of citrus and ethanol on the finish. The taste is sweet and spicy, lingering with an average duration and coating mouthfeel. It's good neat and also enjoyable with ice. While it's pricey for a sourced/finished MGP rye, it's a solid drink.

I've been anticipating this due to the reviews. When I saw it discounted by 30% at Binny's, I had to seize the opportunity. Let's begin by stating that I'm a rye enthusiast, so if you don't favor rye, you might want to consult a different review. Nose - I can definitely detect the port influence and some ethanol. It stings slightly. Palate - Finish - short and with very little burn. You might even call this smooth for a 94 proof whiskey. A slight burn and rye spice on the tongue after it's all gone.

Nose: I truly appreciate the aroma of this one... dark fruits, spiced butterscotch. Taste: mild spice, very soft, the heat doesn't linger, nor does the flavor. Overall: it's satisfactory. It doesn't astound me, but it's not terrible either. I'm not fond of flavors that don't carry through, and this definitely falls into that category.

Overall, it's quite good. The fruit notes didn't sufficiently counteract the spice to achieve the flavor balance I anticipated. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Paired with: pork chorizo, apple butter jam, pickled cucumbers & onions, and diet coke. I would consume this again and likely purchase it again.
