It's understandable, of course, that numerous reviews here draw comparisons between Uigeadail and Corryvreckan. They represent Ardbeg's high-proof offerings. Which is superior? Which do you favor? I sampled the Uigeadail two years ago and am nearing the end of my Corryvreckan, so I haven't tasted them concurrently. My initial thought regarding which is better is to ask: why must I decide? Both have their merits. However, much as I sometimes prefer to be unconventional, I align with the prevailing view that the Uigeadail is marginally preferable. Both are fantastic. We're really splitting hairs when comparing these two, and my evaluation of the Corryvreckan doesn't match the expert review provided, which is interesting. A friend tasted it, and his assessment was nearly identical to theirs: bacon, dark berries. I perceive that as well. But the dark berries are subtle. Regarding fruit, I detect more of a tropical fruit note on the palate, mainly pineapple. And it's quite pronounced for me here. My brother-in-law didn't necessarily pick up on that, but it illustrates how different palates can experience the same spirit uniquely. The whisky itself presents an aroma remarkably similar to Ardbeg 10 Year, perhaps blended with the Beastie. There's peat smoke with an underlying sweetness reminiscent of Werther's Original, possibly a hint of iodine but nothing as medicinal as found in a Laphroaig, and bitter dark chocolate is also present in the aroma. Quite delightful if you're an Islay enthusiast. On the palate is where I detect the pineapple mingling with that butterscotch, combined with prominent smoke that imparts that bacon fat quality. The finish is pleasant and lengthy with a touch of tar mixed with pepper. Overall, an incredible dram that might rank slightly below Uigeadail in my estimation, but one I would happily welcome anytime it's offered. I acquired this a few months ago when my wife was returning from a trip. I had been managing my two children alone all week and wanted to treat myself for coping so well. Uigeadail recently increased in price here from approximately $80 to $90, but the Corryvreckan was still $90 as well, so I decided before it too was marked up by another $10, I'd grab it, and it remains at $90, so I might purchase another bottle to keep in my collection. I do have a bottle of Uigeadail in the cabinet, but it's unopened, and I didn't particularly feel like opening it just for a direct comparison. Relying on memory. It's the superior of the two. P.S. The more I ponder this, the more I feel it drinks like a cask-strength Wee Beastie.

About this bottle
Corryvreckan, meaning "cauldron of the speckled sea," is the name of a major whirlpool situated between the isles of Islay and Jura, and it lends its name to this whisky. This expression is based on Ardbeg 10, with the addition of whisky that matured exclusively in French Limousin Virgin Casks before being combined with the 10-year-old component.

I had heard impressive things about this formidable drink. At 57.1% ABV, wow, it's likely to knock my socks off, and I would expect nothing less from a whisky named after a vortex. Nose: Wonderfully phenolic, bold, and rich. There's a well-balanced intensity of roasted chicken, creamy butter, some pine, fresh cold sea air mixed with light herbal smoke and tarry-antiseptic. Lovely. Palate: Intensely ashy arrival with a pleasant creamy base. Lemon, a bit of anise, charcoal. Big dry-oakiness, dark fruit compote offers a faint hint of sweetness, espresso, bacon drippings. There's almost too much happening here, the spices are punchy and the thread of antiseptic that runs through everything does a remarkable job of keeping it all together. The smokiness is vibrant and somewhat piney/menthol. A powerful palate. Finish: Long. Warming, lemon, cocoa powder, cinnamon and pepper, salty smoke. Deliciously dry. I added about a teaspoon of water and let it sit for a few minutes. The nose softens and brings the smoke forward with the antiseptic moving into sinus-clearing menthol territory, saltiness increases slightly. The palate loses some spice, charcoal comes through and the lemon shifts towards the profile of a sharp mandarin. Fruity dark sweetness emerges into some cherry and blackcurrant. The finish loses a little dryness. Damn, I knew this would be a heavy hitter but I wasn't expecting to actually get pulled into a whirlpool. This is an unrelenting force that keeps coming at you with waves of flavors and textures. Heavy hitting notes are balanced by a surprising softness and just enough sweetness to keep it approachable, and at times even delicate. Well done, that was delicious. Ardbeg scoring: Ardbeg 10: 4.25/5 Wee Beastie: 3/5 Corryvreckan: 4.5/5
The aroma is powerfully peaty with little alcohol presence. It offers a smoky essence, reminiscent of burning wood rather than meat, alongside a noticeable caramel scent. There's a gentle, nutty grain fragrance, possibly from bourbon casks, which blends with the caramel, evoking molasses. It smells like a substantial, rain-soaked log. A faint herbal note is present. The empty glass retains a strong aroma of charred wood. On the palate, it presents a harmony of saltiness and sweetness. It has woody characteristics and a brief, enveloping bitterness on the tongue's exterior. A mild grain aroma is also detected. The finish is smooth, with lingering peaty and smoky notes in the throat. A subtle barbecue scent is apparent. Despite its high alcohol content, the spirit doesn't sting the throat; instead, it leaves a pleasant warmth after swallowing.
Opening a new bottle for the first time. The nose presents iodine, saltiness, and the scent of the sea, with hints of cooked meat behind that. On the palate, caramel sweetness is primary, followed by a sharp shift to smoke as the high proof hits. The finish is smoky and peppery. It's certainly intricate, and perhaps well-balanced, but I wouldn't describe it as fully integrated - that's not a criticism, just an observation that it has a very distinct beginning, middle, and end. It might be like a more intense Ardbeg 10. Possibly the best Ardbeg then. High-proof, expertly crafted peated Scotches are exceptionally appealing.
The most intense scotch I've experienced. I tried this too early in my scotch exploration. It was quite overwhelming. However, I really enjoyed it. Very oily, with a deeply meaty, peaty character. It tastes like thick-cut bacon that has been heavily charred on a charcoal grill. It's a rather sharp whiskey; I detected some sweetness from sherry, but my palate couldn't overcome its considerable intensity. I'd love to try it again now that I'm better prepared for it. It's just a bit beyond my budget as my financial priorities have changed.
