About this bottle

The eighth bottling in Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte PC line, Oileanach Furachail is an annual cask strength release that commenced with the five-year-old PC5 Evolution. Each bottling in the series is given a name from an old language, and "oileanach furachail" refers to a teacher preparing his apprentice for the trade—in this instance, Master Distiller Jim McEwen and Adam Hannett, who collaborated from 2006 until McEwan retired in 2015. This intensely peated Islay single malt is available only at select Global Travel Retail locations and is bottled at a substantial 58.7% ABV.

Late in the event, when your taste buds feel overwhelmed and all whiskies start to taste similar, this bold spirit appears. It cut through the dense atmosphere of the crowded venue and the haze of drinking with a strong presence of diesel and blue cheese. The unexpected deliciousness of this combination suggests some kind of magic (though no law enforcement officials were negatively impacted during its creation).

An incredible nose! Meaty, earthy, salty, followed by fruitiness and sweetness. Reminds me of smoked bacon coated in honey that fell into campfire ashes. Further nosing reveals orange notes. On the palate: charred oranges, some pepper, and a cheesy flavor. It then returns to fresh fruits, perhaps cherry? The finish is long with smoke reappearing. If you appreciate complexity and layers of flavor, this excellent Bruichladdich is a must-try.

A delightful dram, heavily peated and cask strength. Not for the timid, but perfectly suited to my preferences. Abundant depth and flavor.
