Amber Lane Equinox

Nose: Subtle sherry, butter, caramel, maple fudge, woody resin, mild spice (nutmeg, clove). Dilution reveals orange zest. Palate: Sweet, smooth start with significant malt extract and some molasses. Limited progression, but mild wood spices emerge alongside dried fruits and a touch of vanilla. A splash of water brings out pleasant orange marmalade notes. Finish: Medium length, featuring caramel and gentle spice. A faint metallic hint appears but dissipates, leaving a lively sweet aftertaste. Amber Lane distillery has been making whisky on the NSW mid-coast for a little over two years. Their first offerings were, as is common in Australia, strong, bold young whiskies heavily influenced by sherry casks. While this "pack in as much intensity as possible" strategy sometimes succeeds and they made a good impression with their initial bottlings, it can also result in an overwhelming spirit lacking subtlety. I acquired some of their early batches but eventually lost interest. I remained a subscription member of the distillery until late 2023 when the membership structure became a pricier plan that didn't appeal to me. I ended my subscription and received store credit, which I used to purchase a bottle of this Equinox release. This is a calmer, much more approachable spirit than their prior offerings, and the blend of sherry cask and ex-bourbon cask aging is well-balanced. It's also their least expensive whisky to date and feels more confident overall, though still a bit youthful. I'm uncertain if I would repurchase it, considering alternative options in this price range, but it offers good value for the cost. It's decent... not exceptional, but decent.
