Starward Wine Cask Malt Whisky

Nose: Caramel, butterscotch, wine, floral, and citrus notes. Some cherry and berry aromas. Palate: Sweet toffee on entry, as it develops the sweetness fades and is balanced by a pleasantly mild but tannic dryness and some gentle peppery-anise notes. Red fruits, grapes, plums – fruity but not excessively wine-like. Finish: A medium finish – dry, fruity, and nutty with a faint hint of spices. The nose is more vibrant than that of the solera expression. It also appears more balanced and textured with a dry rather than sweet profile. Like all Starward whiskies, this one falls somewhere between bourbon and scotch in character. It takes a little time to fully comprehend. I suggest simply pouring a dram and relaxing with it without any preconceived notions or expectations. If you attempt to compare it (or any Australian whisky) with scotch whisky or bourbon, you will be disappointed. You need to allow it time to express itself. The relatively short aging period is entirely in Australian ex-shiraz barrels, and this contributes a robust and pleasantly dry character. It’s a more intricate and engaging whisky than the solera expression and rewards patient tasting. A good, capable whisky. “Good”: 83/100 (3.5 stars)

Full of character. The initial sip was invigorating, like a slap in the face. It continues with fruity vanilla and a subtle hint of peat. Considering the bargain price of $80AUD, you get a good, well-rounded, smooth whisky that is a perfectly balanced, finely tuned spirit.

Easily one of my all-time favorites. This whisky brings something uniquely Australian to the table. The beautiful Barossa shiraz casks have given such depth and flavor to the whisky. I love, love, love it!

The aroma is reminiscent of a dessert wine, like port, with a fantastic mouthfeel. Oak barrels are clearly present, which is reflected in the stunning caramel hue. It's best enjoyed straight, not on ice or with water.

The aroma is powerful with banana and vanilla. The taste is mellow, with some spice and the influence of wine. The finish is pleasant and balanced.
