Yamato Special Edition Cask Strength

I sampled a measure of this at a local establishment, wanting to evaluate another Japanese product. The distinctive square, dimpled bottle, reminiscent of I.W. Harper, features the prominent Yamato lettering underlined in red. This is an interesting spirit, aligning with my expectations. Nose: Exhibits dry fruit characteristics, with tart pear and crisp apple, subtle sweet undertones like honeydew nectar, and some warmer spices. No initial malt notes; precisely what I was hoping for. Palate Entry: Ah, there's the malt, as anticipated, but it complements the dry fruit, which holds its own and keeps pace. This is where the Eastern influence becomes apparent, revealing small hints of barrel character and floral garden herbs. The sweetness is mild, contributing to a dry profile; the overall spectrum is very pleasant but unfortunately short-lived. The mid-palate transitions swiftly to a finish of pleasant dry black pepper and salt, warm rather than hot, fading gradually. For a cask strength offering, it seems remarkably mild and enjoyable. While the malt is evident, this spirit possesses a complexity I appreciate, unlike the straightforward malts such as Nikka, which I find uninspired and not worth reviewing. It likely contains some younger components, as the NAS designation suggests, giving it a slightly thin body, yet it's blended well enough to mask any obvious flaws. I have no information on the price, so this rating is based solely on taste. Cheers!

Sweet pear and floral notes at the start with a mild bit of heat. Followed by a slightly malty middle taste that doesn't last long, before sherry and oak barrel flavors with a hint of char. There's also some plum on the finish.

I found the regular version to be good and very easy to drink, but this special edition surpasses it significantly. The whisky is rich in flavor and drinks smoothly on its own; no dilution is necessary.

The nose features spicy clove and allspice with a leading fruity plum note, followed by a sherry influence and a slightly rough finish.

Sweet with a charcoal taste. Not ideal for sipping, but surprisingly excellent for taking shots.

My first experience with Japanese whiskey. Quite nice!
