About this bottle

Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash is part of Michter's Legacy Series and is named in tribute to John Shenk, the 1753 founder of the Pennsylvania distillery that would become Michter's. The whiskey is produced using a sour mash process, a technique where a portion of the previous mash is incorporated into the next batch to maintain flavor consistency, among other benefits. The 2024 iteration of this recipe includes rye, malted rye, and, for the first time, caramel malt. Additionally, some maturation barrels contain oak from France's Vosges region, toasted according to Michter's standards. Availability is limited, commencing in July 2024. (SRP $110)

Kara Baldwin 4.3

Trying this brand for the first time, I find it offers a refreshing departure from typical bourbons and ryes. The aroma is somewhat muted with citrus and subtle spice notes from the wood influence. The palate is quite enjoyable - orange creamsicle with hints of spice. There are no harsh edges. The finish is fresh and clean. I genuinely appreciate this as a quality, lower-proof spirit with depth that is easy to savor and value. Quite pleased with the acquisition and eager to finish this bottle as it brings something distinct to the table compared to high-proof powerhouses.

I concur with the expert tasting notes. Lots of cherry with a woody funk, but I don't agree with the score. This one deserves to be in the nineties. Every release seems to get better than the last, and that's difficult to do.

Nose: caramel, charcoal, fudge, butterscotch, tobacco, orange peel. Palate: smooth and sweet; vanilla, caramel, applesauce, charcoal, oak, a touch of pepper.

I detect caramel, chocolate, cherry. Not a lot of flavor initially but a nice finish. Not my top choice for sipping.
