Woodinville Straight 100% Rye Ruby Port Cask Finish (2022 Harvest Release)

Smell: Brown sugar, clove, worn leather, dark chocolate-covered raisins, grape skins, spices Taste: Spicy cinnamon heat, cherry licorice, dark chocolate, brown sugar, a whisper of leather, clove Aftertaste: Lasting cherry sweetness, ginger/cinnamon tingle/warmth, brown sugar, dark cherry/raisin sweetness Rating: 91/100 Final Thoughts: This rye, finished in port, was quite good. I suspect they made a smart choice reducing the proof for bottling; otherwise, it might have been too harsh or overly sweet. The port character is evident but not dominant. It's been a while since I sampled their lower-proof rye, and I'd forgotten the pleasant soft chocolate notes in their products – it's excellent. This is perfect for sipping neat and would also shine in mixed drinks, imparting a lovely cherry and chocolate essence. It would be a great companion for sitting by a campfire. This is a very well-balanced rye. It has a sweet floral aroma. Notes of dark cherry appear upfront, leading into a spicy rye finish. It's mellow and full of flavor.
