About this bottle

Broken Barrel Heresy Rye starts with Kentucky straight rye (95% rye, 5% malted barley) that was distilled by Owensboro Distilling Co. and aged for a minimum of 2 years. The rye is then transferred to a tank and further aged with specific oak staves: 40% ex-bourbon barrel staves, 40% new French oak staves, and 20% sherry oak staves. This updated version, bottled at 105 proof, was released in late January 2022.

Alton Breen 4.3

Sharp rye spikes from the start. However, what sets this intriguingly apart from most rye whiskies is how the sherry cask staves cut through, adding a substantial amount of grape flavor. This might not appeal to everyone, but it certainly works. Surprisingly, even at 105 proof, this is a very approachable spirit with an autumnal character.

Kurt Moffett 4.0

It possesses a strong kick but offers a multitude of flavor profiles. I acquired this at a great price from a discount liquor store. I would purchase it again. Excellent served with a single large ice cube.

Marcus Key 5.0

A mellow 95/5 rye with a spicy kick.
