Westland Garryana 2020 Edition 5 marks the fifth annual release from the Seattle-based distillery. This edition is also part of the new Outpost Range, which focuses on single malt whiskeys that emphasize a primary raw ingredient and its terroir. Garryana specifically highlights the wood used in its production—Quercus garryana, an oak species native to the Pacific Northwest. This edition matures peated spirit in virgin Quercus garryana casks (36%), with the remainder aged in first-fill ex-bourbon Quercus Alba (American white oak) barrels. It became available in November 2020.

This single malt and unique wood species creates a different American whiskey. The aroma is a bit grassy/peaty with a slight stone fruit sweetness. The first sip is mellow on the front with a creeping sweetness. Subsequent tastes bring a touch of woodsy sourness on the edges, slightly sweet pear sweetness, and a pleasant growing spiciness and burn to finish.
Appearance: Golden brown. Smell: Ground almonds, a stable, fallen leaves from autumn. Taste: Coarse coffee grounds, a cinnamon pastry, fruit preserved in brandy. Aftertaste: A race circuit with scorched tires, brand-new footwear for the start of the year, a sharpened writing tool.
The aroma is much sweeter than the other variants, primarily honey. The flavor is reminiscent of scotch; the malted barley is prominent, while the honey sweetness takes a secondary role. Spicy barrel heat emerges at the end, offering a rich quality that extends the finish.
This is a really intriguing spirit... woody and spiced in a very pleasing way with a great mouthfeel and perhaps a light hint of peat. This brings to mind the Amrut Fusion quite a bit.
