About this bottle

The Glenrothes 25 Year, launched in September 2018, is part of the Soleo Collection. This single malt prominently features first-fill sherry seasoned casks in its maturation process and, like other releases in the collection, has a completely natural color. The Soleo Collection, named after the grape drying method used for certain sherry styles like Pedro Ximenez, replaces all prior Glenrothes expressions and is bottled at 86 proof.

Glenrothes used to be a go-to for me, and I would usually open a bottle to celebrate special occasions like my wedding; it was always a crowd-pleaser. However, something changed around 2010 with their releases, and I haven't found myself liking their results as much. I tried a few of their new core range at a whiskey fest a few years ago but didn't seem to care for any of them. I was fortunate to get a sample of their 25 year for $50, hoping for a surprise. On the nose, I get apple custard with anise, nutmeg, cinnamon, and lychee fruit. Tasting reveals notes of burnt cinnamon stick, toffee apples, custard creaminess, and anise spices that finish off with lots of wood spice, a slight burn, and orchard fruit. Overall, it's a nice whiskey; I certainly wouldn't pass on being offered a pour, but in terms of price, this is a definite pass.
