The aroma presents mint and pepper with a touch of herbal bitterness and perhaps some vegetable notes. It does not smell sweet. There might be a faint scent of tobacco. The taste, however, is sweeter, and the texture is surprisingly thick, with both mint and pepper, along with some bitter richness, but more richness than bitterness. There's a rather pleasant toasty quality. It's a clean flavor, unlike the disinfectant taste of Rat Bastard Gin. It's interesting and fairly intricate despite not being an overpowering flavor. Some subtle smoky notes blend in well. This is an excellent representation of what tequila can be, offering what I seek in mezcal instead of that gasoline taste. The complexity is truly nice, and all the flavors integrate well, making it engaging. A score of 16-18 seems appropriate. I have it at 17 now, but I may increase it. It's likely a bit superior to Pacific Voyager gin, though not remarkably so.

About this bottle
Agaves harvested from the "Puerta de Aire" ranch, located about 3 kilometers northeast of La Alteña, were used to produce this unaged tequila. The plants were seven years old at the time of harvest. The land is characterized by a gentle slope of red soil, with oak and cedar trees interspersed within and bordering the rancho. Certain bottles available commercially are black, released in commemoration of the Day of the Dead.
