About this bottle

Stranahan's 12 Year Founder's Release commemorates January 19, 2025, the date the American single malt whiskey category received federal recognition. This 100% malted barley whiskey underwent initial aging in new, charred American oak barrels, followed by a finishing period in casks that previously held bourbon and blonde ale, for a total maturation of at least 12 years. Bottled at 120 proof (60% ABV), it will be offered through the brand's website, with deliveries anticipated later in the winter season, at a price of $199.99.

NEAT AROMA - Cinnamon over Apple Pie, Honey TASTE - Light on the palate but packed with flavor. The aroma transfers to the taste, and every note can be discerned easily. I'm unsure how this flavor profile emerged from finishing 100% single malt in former bourbon and ale casks. The malted barley and their process at Stranahan’s are surely something special. FINISH - This was very close to a five-star rating, but the finish is somewhat disappointing. The palate concludes with honey, transitioning into cinnamon and a bitter oak and bitter ale flavor. The finish reveals that it was partly finished in ale casks. SHOULD I BUY? - Yes! I did hesitate at the price, but fortunately, my preferred store had a sample bottle. After tasting it, I couldn't pass it up. However, I must say, I don't recall the finish being this bitter during the sample. Perhaps it needs more air to open up, as the bottle at the store was about half gone. Time will tell! BUY AGAIN? - No, solely due to the price and a desire to explore other options.

The finest cinnamon-forward whiskey I've ever sampled. From aroma to finish, it's an intense cinnamon experience. The nose is redolent of snickerdoodle cookies and apple pie; the palate is rich and full, with notes of cream soda, oak, and cloves. The extended finish offers pleasant berry nuances.

Tasted immediately after a 2025 snowflake release. Nose: subtle, yeasty, hints of vanilla Palate: sweet cinnamon at the start, followed by licorice, pecans coated in maple syrup, thick texture, reminiscent of horchata, with oak notes in the aftertaste.

One of a kind. Perfect for holiday gatherings. Flavors of cinnamon and mint.

Diane Agee 3.5

The finish has cinnamon, which wasn't my favorite
