Stork Club Rye Malt

An elegant Straight Rye Whiskey from Spreewald Distillery in Berlin, Germany, made with 100% German rye and aged for 3 years in a distinctive blend of American and German Napoleon oak barrels, bottled at 45% ABV. It has an aromatic beginning with notes of rye, wood, fruits, herbs, and spices; a rich and spicy middle adds notes of caramel, dark chocolate, espresso, and citrus; leading to a warm and velvety finish of medium length with notes of oak, pepper, and toffee.

The aroma is of pine and paint thinner. It has a golden color that coats the glass, leaving very slow legs. It's hot on the palate, with flavors of wood and leather hidden behind the harshness. Adding a bit of water doesn't help; it only brings out earthy mid-notes that don't appeal to me. I consistently want to enjoy ryes, but I suppose I haven't reached that point yet.

A German Rye from a German distillery using German grains, finished in ex-white wine casks. Intriguing! The combination results in a typical rye profile that is richer and earthier, blended with dry wine flavors like green pepper. I'm not a huge fan, but it certainly has character and is unique, and the flavors meld well.

The nose has a bit of vanilla and some oak. The palate has some oakiness, a hint of white grape/white wine flavor, and then a little spiciness and bite. The finish is a mild burn that lingers slightly. Overall, this is a decent rye with an interesting white wine flavor that becomes more apparent as I continue to drink it.

The nose is quite subtle, but it really comes alive when you taste and swallow. It's everything I seek in a rye.

I'm not fond of the black licorice and artificial sweetener notes on the palate.
