Still Austin Cask Strength Rye Whiskey is a barrel-proof version of The Artist, the brand's primary rye offering. This whiskey is made entirely from Texas rye, just like the original. It is only the second cask strength release from the brand. Nancy Fraley, Master Blender, is responsible for blending all Still Austin spirits. The label was designed by Marc Burckhardt, an artist native to Texas. It has been available online in most US states and at select retail stores in Texas since August 2023, with a suggested retail price of $65.

TASTED NEAT
NOSE - The advertised notes are accurate. I detect cherry cobbler and gingerbread cookie, along with oak and a hint of lemon peel.
PALATE - It's immediately drying, with significant oak and ginger. The texture is slightly viscous.
FINISH - The finish is long but dry. Not my preferred kind.
SHOULD YOU BUY IT? - Yes, if you enjoy bold, spicy rye. I don't find it sweet at all.
WOULD YOU BUY IT AGAIN? - Still Austin has just begun releasing single barrels of this, so I'd likely purchase one of those in the future.

Still Austin's rye whiskey, made entirely from rye, presents an overall profile that reminds me of a very familiar 95/5 from Indiana. Another interesting detail about this whiskey is its proof; at only 116, it's just 16 points higher than Still Austin's standard rye, which is bottled at 100 proof.
I would be interested to compare this directly with Bulleit Rye, as this pour is highly reminiscent of that classic rye whiskey.

Got this as a gift.
Glass: Glencairn, sat for 15 minutes.
Color: Deep amber shade.
Smell: Abundant earthy, green notes alongside mint.
Taste: Notes of baking spice and clove.
Aftertaste: Lingering finish with moderate warmth.
Small addition: A sharp, minty aroma emerges.
General: 8/10 - My past encounters with whiskey from Texas haven't been great, but this one is solid. It's a better-than-average rye, and it's reasonably priced. However, I'm curious how more maturation in oak might have improved it.

An elegant, single barrel, cask strength rye whiskey made in Texas from 100% local rye and bottled at 116 proof. It begins with aromas of cinnamon-butter crust, candied ginger, lemon zest, apricot streusel, and coffee cake. The rich and spicy middle adds notes of grilled peaches, mint ice cream, apple, marzipan dumplings, and gingerbread, leading to a balanced, medium-length finish with notes of brown butter, mint leaves, and muddled cherries. The nose was quite appealing despite the high proof. Apricot, caramel, and vanilla lead to a hint of pine.
The palate is warm and buttery, with immediate notes of vanilla and banana bread. A slightly tart pine influence emerges as you chew, along with some sassafras.
The finish is rather long, delivering ample pepper to showcase its Texas Rye character!
Overall, I'm very pleased with this 100% Rye!

Powerful yet smooth. Deep flavors of dark rye spice, cocoa, and toasted oak lead to a bold, full-bodied palate with layers of vanilla, caramelized sugar, and roasted grain. The long, clean finish is sweet but not overly so. A robust pour with clarity and refinement; familiar tastes presented with exceptional accuracy and intensity.
