Stauning Rye

A powerful Danish Rye Whisky from Stauning Whisky Distillery. Made with Danish malted rye and barley, all floor-malted on the premises. It was distilled twice in copper pot stills heated by open flames, then matured in fresh American oak barrels before bottling at 48% ABV. It starts with a fragrant bouquet of grain, wood, dark fruits, nuts, herbs, and spices. The middle has a spicy character with notes of just-baked rye bread with melted butter, black pepper, mint, blackberry, and lemon oil, leading to a mellow, medium-length finish of toasted oak, vanilla, cinnamon, pecan praline, cocoa, and stone fruits. Aroma: Vibrant and strong with notes of fresh rye bread, caramel, vanilla, and a hint of orchard fruit. Taste: Substantial and spicy, with layers of cinnamon, toasted oak, honey, and a touch of dark chocolate. Aftertaste: Lingering and warming, with persistent rye spice, sweet vanilla, and a hint of herbal freshness.

Throughout, there are rich berry, vanilla, and mild spice notes. The rye spice is pleasant and not overpowering. Similar to what others have noted, there's a subtle hint of mint and cinnamon. The rye and sweet elements reach their peak quickly, then stabilize and linger. Overall, it’s a satisfying spirit for sipping.

The aroma is quite subtle, offering notes of apple and mint. It possesses a deep, golden amber hue. The texture is viscous, yielding more hanging legs than wispy trails. The initial taste is a warm hit of alcohol, succeeded by a delicate creamy flavor, more mint, and a finish that is mildly bitter with a peppery edge. While I'm not usually a fan of ryes, this one is acceptable.

I don't detect much on the nose. The palate is decidedly herbal with spice and perhaps a touch of pine along with vanilla. The finish is a sharp burn, somewhat reminiscent of bourbon. Generally, it's an acceptable rye, though not one I'd likely choose regularly.
