The color resembles a dark bronze/copper hue, and the scents bring molasses, a hint of spice, and perhaps a slight tobacco note; quite appealing but delicate (when I contrasted it with the standard Santa Teresa 1796 Solera Rum). The palate introduces some of the Speyside character, but I believe it diminished some of the positive qualities of the standard 1796. Certain Speyside Scotches often exhibit more honey or citrus flavors, followed by a "medicinal" quality... which emerges on the palate, although lightly. Instead, the tobacco/leather flavor nearly vanished, though I detected a trace of it toward the end. I value the experiment, but in this situation, I prefer the standard Santa Teresa 1796 over this one. Still a pleasant drink/sipper.

This limited edition release is the inaugural bottling in Santa Teresa's solera series, Santa Teresa 1796. Drawing inspiration from both Venezuela and the Scottish Highlands, Santa Teresa Maestra Ronera Nancy Duarte extended the rum's maturation by an additional 13 months in casks that previously held Speyside whisky. Available online at the brand's website and select retailers since October 2023, there are 2,100 bottles in this release, priced at $49.99.
