San Matias Legado Blanco

The aroma is richer with more chocolate than the standard San Matias. It has a peculiar oily scent and something slightly spoiled, but not sulfurous—more like pureed cauliflower. The cauliflower flavor resembles Clan MacGregor and is not good, though it vaguely functions somewhat in a tequila. The mouthfeel is quite thick with a substantial malty character that includes unpleasant bread, but in a rich, dignified manner that's somewhat appealing. It's sweet yet enjoyable. The taste can be somewhat mineral and watery, but it doesn't feel light. The richness and oiliness suggest potential as base flavors for something, but they don't form a complete profile. It's a bit strange and primarily benefits from its richness and viscosity. Lunazul offers more in its flavor profile, so I lean towards that. However, this isn't significantly inferior. This tequila's redeeming quality is that it's excellent in eggnog!

Consumed neat. The aroma is fresh and clear, with notes of agave, a hint of herbs, citrus, and mild ethanol. The taste is sweet with notes of sugarcane and agave, plus citrus, green herbs, and a touch of anise. After airing out or a few sips, some fruit and mint notes emerge. The finish is drying and builds over time, with herbal, sugary, and alcohol warmth. Overall, the mouthfeel is a bit thin with some alcohol heat. It's pleasant with no off-putting flavors, but lacks complexity. Offers great value. If you're seeking a blanco for making mixed drinks for a party, this is excellent. Around me, the same price gets me a 750ml of Altos, which I might prefer for sipping. However, for a 1.75l bottle, this is $15 cheaper and an undeniable bargain. Consider the reposado for a dollar more.

Pleasantly good neat for its cost. It doesn't rival top-shelf options, but for the price, it significantly outperforms others. Last time I tried it neat, I detected pleasant sweet citrus and delightful salty cooked agave notes throughout. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I'm sure of it. If you're seeking an affordable tequila suitable for sipping neat, I believe this is a reasonable selection.

Excessively sweet, like artificial sweetener. Acceptable in a sweet cocktail mixed with a little mezcal for a dry, smoky contrast.
