Diplomático Mantuano Rum

Appearance: A deep, rich caramel hue—like liquid molasses in a glass, warm and inviting. Darker than amber, it reflects light like a polished gem, hinting at sweetness before the first taste. Nose: Molasses is prominent, followed by notes of oak and something earthy, pungent, and vibrant. Touches of cane sugar and a subtle hint of vanilla blend with what could be honey or cinnamon—sweet and grounded, like dark, moist earth in summertime. Palate: A burst of bright flavor—sweet, complex, and remarkably drinkable. Key notes include: Molasses, brown sugar, vanilla Hints of cane sugar and possibly honey A wave of fruit—perhaps pear, fig, sweet heirloom apple, or apricot—but too delicate and shifting to identify precisely Soft, blended oak, noticeable but not overpowering Possibly cinnamon, adding warmth and a slight spice Finish: Exceptionally smooth—virtually no alcohol burn at 80 proof. A long, warm finish that leaves behind hints of sweetness and intrigue. Conclusion: 5 stars. An outstanding Tier 2 bottle that drinks like a Tier 1. At $26, this is a rare find. Smooth, complex, and remarkably refined for its cost. Following a really pleasing rum, I had to try another. This had such high praise and a great price(acquired for 22$) Poured neat, the aroma is raw vanilla and pressed sugar cane with a fresh lightness. I'm not detecting many barrel notes or molasses. It's more like butter rum candies. The palate is light and smooth and sweet. It lacks the intensity of the previous rum, but it's very simple to drink. All the flavors taste very natural, the vanilla and the rich sugars with birch beer and baking spice are all extremely fresh with a buttery roundness. Some barrel influence appears at the end, leading to a finish of dry wood with smoky sarsaparilla sweetness. Once again, it's very smooth, I'm unsure if it would hold up in mixing, but it's so good neat who cares. I'm new to rum, but I can discern the quality here..........84/100.......... If you desire some silky sweet quality rum, give this a try; at the price, you can't go wrong. I suspect most rum enthusiasts would enjoy this more than I.

It's too soon to form a definitive opinion. I just opened the bottle and had a sample. It was acceptable, but perhaps my expectations were higher. The aroma had notes of raisins, subtle oak, and cinnamon. The scents gradually evolved and became more aromatic toward the end. The palate offered a touch of sweetness alongside abundant dried fruits, particularly dates, raisins, and cinnamon spice. It began to resemble cola near the finish. I thought I was starting to appreciate it as I was finishing my dram. I will revisit it and update my assessment.

The nose has notes of caramel, vanilla, banana, and semi-sweet dark chocolate with a hint of orange peel and a touch of clove. On the palate, vanilla and caramel dominate, coating the tongue and the back of the throat. There's a very subtle spice, almost imperceptible due to the rum's sweetness. Dark, almost burnt dry oak, baking spices, brown sugar caramel, and a whisper of vanilla sweetness. Significantly less sweet and less polished than another specific rum. I don't mind the reduced sweetness or the darker character. The dryness actually makes me want more of the sweet elements. However, it's occasionally too dry/bitter. Good on its own, but likely superior as a mixer. Cost $42 in Ontario.

Excellent as an inexpensive spirit to sip, and superb in simpler rum cocktails like those with pineapple and orange juice plus honey syrup. A "breakfast" rum, if ever there was one. It took me a considerable amount of time to get even close to finishing this bottle, but that's primarily because 90% of the time I consume rum, it's in cheaper shots with Coke Zero. This isn't suited for that purpose. I will likely purchase another bottle someday, but I'm not sure when.
