Riverboat Rye Whiskey

First Tasting (Bottle Opening Batch #5) Aroma: Very prominent rye upfront, a hint of soap, perhaps a bit musty, maybe a touch of pine? Snifter: Somewhat spicy, honestly a bit musty, definitely rye, a bit harsh, it genuinely tastes young, the faintest hint of vanilla. On ice: It sweetens up considerably, the vanilla becomes more apparent, the rye is still present, and the musty notes are much more mellow, perhaps some cinnamon notes? Drink Suggestion: Sazerac, I believe the rye and mustiness would complement the absinthe well. Conclusion: Worth Trying: While there are certainly superior ryes, this is a style/type of rye I encounter periodically that I think people should experience to truly appreciate the category of rye whiskey.

I needed a quick and cheap rye for work, and something new. This fit the bill at $22, but I was doubtful. As expected, this rye has a very thin body (it practically vanishes on the tongue) making the flavors difficult to discern. It's certainly floral and definitely young.

While my bottle doesn't match the image, I'm confident it's the same whiskey. Nose: Apple, spice. Taste: Pleasantly sweet, fairly smooth. Less spicy than most ryes. A crisp apple note emerges on the late palate.

I was searching for a non-scotch whiskey to mix with soda. This was ideal for that purpose. It's also enjoyable on the rocks. Is it complex? No. But simplicity can be good at times. And the price is unbeatable.

A pleasant, light aroma with notes of spice and clove. The palate is smooth and sweet. Despite being 90 proof, it drinks like an 80. At $20, it's a fantastic everyday rye for sipping or mixing.

Aroma: bread and barrel. Palate: bread, wheat, a faint cinnamon apple flavor that is muted. Quite smooth for a rye.
