Port Charlotte 10 Year Second Edition

Nose: An absolutely stunning smoky aroma, among the finest I've experienced. Also, a scent of muted brine - not a sea breeze, but the smell of the shore as the tide recedes. Some warm, rich cereal maltiness for body, hints of mild citrus and berry fruits, an oily vegetal scent (pine? freshly cut oak?). A remarkable display - smoke, malt, and fruit perform a trio in a seaside pavilion bordering a forest. Palate: A sweet and spicy arrival that approaches hotness but falls just short. Full yet gentle smokiness, toffee, star anise, a dash of black pepper, apples, sweet lemon zest, and a seaside brininess. Finish: Long, with mild chili or pepper and some sweetness. A hint of citrus and a sweet spiciness reminiscent of pastis in the aftertaste. Perfectly balanced at 50% alcohol by volume, this whisky is wonderful neat but can handle a little water for a softer presentation that is frankly even more enjoyable and highly recommended. Don't drown it, just a dash is all that's needed. This enhances the smokiness on the nose and blends the other aromas together quite wonderfully. It also brings out a previously shy honey note that moves to center stage, like an unexpected guest soloist. On the palate, water works a similar transformation, uncovering a sweet citrus flavor from the lemon zest and merging the spicy notes. A new smoky and slightly oily component also emerges from seemingly nowhere. The mouthfeel and entire presentation are elevated a notch, and the finale gains a softer honey-like sweetness. This is a thoroughly enjoyable whisky - highly recommended and the best new thing I've tasted in a while. In my opinion, Port Charlotte expressions are more nuanced than Octomore and represent better value at half the price (although Octomore still commands the high ground as far as intensity goes). Probably difficult to find now, except through auction. "Outstanding": 90/100 (5 stars)

One of my newly favored Islay whiskies; I appreciate the distinct cask combination creating genuinely unique flavors of spicy apricot and a dry red wine, followed by a smooth peat that lingers. I'm particularly impressed considering its approximate $100 CAD price point!

Nose: Peaty with hints of cherry, raspberry, orange, and vanilla. Palate: Orange, vanilla, and peat; nutty. Finish: Smooth and slightly acidic, with lingering smoke.

This is a good, solid Islay whisky. Smoky aroma. Slight sweetness and spice.

Peaty, very smooth.
