About this bottle
Penderyn Rich Oak 46%, launched in autumn 2018, is the newest addition to the Gold Range from this Welsh distillery. It joins the existing Madeira, Sherrywood, Portwood, and Peated expressions. Previously available only in limited quantities, Rich Oak now has a permanent position in the core range. It's important to note that Rich Oak was previously offered as a limited batch at 50% ABV and as a Single Cask at 59.8% ABV.

A rich Welsh Single Malt Whisky from Penderyn Distillery in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. It was initially aged in ex-Bourbon casks, then finished in reconditioned Wine casks before being bottled at 46% ABV.
It offers an aromatic start with notes of toasted granola, honey, fudge, vanilla, and tropical fruits like mango, papaya, guava & plantains; its rich body adds notes of vanilla creams, toasted barley, toffee, Dutch apple pie, dark chocolate, nuts & cinnamon; leading to a well-balanced, medium-length finish with notes of flowers, banana fritters, vanilla flan & cider. The aroma is rich with tropical and orchard fruit, vanilla taffy, fruit gems, honey, and cinnamon, plus a bit of oak.
This scent is pleasant, presenting softly yet with substance.
TASTE
The flavor is an exact duplicate, just a little richer and deeper.
I'm really liking the overall character of the Penderyn Rich Oak Single Malt. It's warming, strong, and expressive. It's fantastic.
FINISH
Medium length, with tropical fruit candy, vanilla taffy, and some malty sweetness fading into a slightly metallic and oaky taste.

As expected, this is very oak-forward, bringing with it associated flavors like woodiness, ample vanilla, and some secondary peppery spices. It has decent smoothness, but could be smoother (the finish is a bit too sharp for my liking), and it's somewhat one-dimensional, making it a good but not exceptional whiskey.

This has a distinct apple aroma, followed by a rich, sweet apple flavor. Upon tasting, you immediately notice the apple, which then fades into a light, fresh apple. The finish isn't long, but it's sufficient to identify the flavor – yes, apple.

Nose: Unripe apple, a touch of solvent. Whispers of exotic fruits. The aroma mellows out over time.
Palate: Smooth mouthfeel. Subtle tropical notes, with mango being prominent. Oak-derived spice emerges.
Finish: Hints of vanilla, followed by warming baking spices. The tropical fruit character persists.
