Old Pulteney Clipper Commemorative

I had been keen to try this limited release, non-age-stated bottling, but hesitated due to the $10 premium over the 12-year-old (my rule: non-age-stated is acceptable if priced fairly). Then, I received a $10 discount from my local fine spirits shop, prompting me to buy a bottle as supplies seemed to be dwindling. It's unmistakably Old Pulteney from the first sniff—that rich, fruity character is prominent, this time with an apple overtone. There's also a savory olive note, some raisins, a bit of vanilla, and even a hint of chocolate; the only typical OP characteristic that's less pronounced for me here is citrus. That said, there's some lemony brightness on the palate, along with crisp fresh fruit, a bit of salt, and some vanilla...plus the expected heat from what is presumably a younger whisky. I find it a bit unreasonable to price this above the 12-year, but it still has enough positive attributes to earn good marks. I just wish it were less expensive; at a more competitive price point, it could serve as a decent introduction to the distillery for budget-conscious buyers.

Shit, a bit like Clontarf which tastes too much like banana, but this one is orange. A sort of Scottish mimosa. If it were a person, it would be an unpleasant redhead.

Nose smells like sweet, salty licorice. Taste is salty malt with a light peat that isn't too strong. It finishes fast with little aftertaste.

Good quality malt, but the flavor profile is unremarkable and lacks uniqueness.

Acquired this at The Royal Mike Whiskey in Edinburgh. Truly enjoyed it.
