OGD BIB 7 (Spring 18) (Read from here for the review) An interesting (to me, at least) situation arose while dining out at a place renowned for having one of the state's largest spirit selections. I was contemplating my choice and discovered "The Poor Man’s Flight" for $10. It included one ounce each of JW Dant, 4 Roses Yellow, and the standard OGDBIB. I figured 3oz of spirits for $10 was likely the best value available, so I ordered it. My wife and daughter each took a sip of each (likely diminishing some of that value) and both made a disgusted face at the JWD & the 4RYL, but declared the OGDBIB the best and "smoothest," even though it was 100 proof. So, upon entering the liquor store, OGDBIB was foremost in my thoughts. Lo and behold, they had just stocked this. *AROMA: Dry, Slightly Musty Oak, Spiced Vanilla Cake, Cinnamon, Cocoa Powder, Candied Orange Peel, & Leather. Very Good. *NEAT: WOW! Oak, Vanilla, Black Licorice, Black & White Pepper, Cinnamon, Orange Peel. A hint of Mustiness. Slightly Tannic with a Longish Finish featuring the Licorice note intensifying. A pleasant warmth. *SPLASH: Adding a bit of water really enhances the Vanilla and Oak Spice. Some Bubblegum & Mint appear. Lots of Cinnamon on the finish. I have a feeling this will be excellent over a large ice cube (it was, I've already consumed 1/3 of the bottle). *CONCLUSION: I happened upon this today and couldn't resist buying a couple. It met expectations, especially given its $40 price point. It has a more classic character than the other new 7YR BIB I recently praised (Bulleit), but costs about $15 less. It's a limited offering, but I suspect it will be released annually (perhaps once for each distilling season). If you can find it, I highly recommend it. 4.25 stars

About this bottle
Old Grand-Dad, initially released in 1882, was acquired in 1987 by Beam Inc., now known as James B. Beam Distilling Co. Produced in Kentucky by Beam using the same high-rye bourbon mash bill as Basil Hayden, the OGD line includes various proofs and ages, such as a bottled-in-bond version. Beam is introducing an annual 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon, with this 2025 release distilled in spring 2018, as indicated on the front label. It is bottled at 100 proof, adhering to bottled-in-bond regulations, and will be available from July 2025 with a suggested retail price of $39.99.

Color: Medium Copper Amber Smell: Strawberry! I've never detected "strawberry" from any bottle before. Amazing! It's very "berry" overall, plus "oak" and "brown sugar". Taste: (Consumed with a large ice cube) Sweet and spicy. A noticeable warmth spreads through the chest immediately. Plenty of oak. More berries on the palate. I've sampled the original 80 proof, 100 proof Bottled-in-Bond, and 114 proof versions. This one stands out as distinctly unique to me. A second serving reveals a similar berry-forward profile. It's reminiscent of a blend of "fresh" berries and strawberry milk powder. As the ice melts, cocoa powder emerges. While not intricate, this spirit is incredibly enjoyable! Finish: A fairly long finish featuring baking spices and a hint of oaky cinnamon. Final Assessment: I've been searching for this bottle since July but haven't found it anywhere in Southern California. Before traveling to Florida for the holidays, I checked the local Total Wines and found it available near my accommodation. I was fortunate to get the last bottle on the shelf. If it becomes available here, I will certainly purchase it again. 4.25 stars!
The aroma begins with fruitiness mingled with oak, complemented by earthy notes and traces of leather and smoke, with hints of baking spices, vanilla, and a whisper of toffee in the background. It appears quite impressive, building nicely before a sip. The taste starts with a slight burst of baking spices alongside the fruity oak notes, as vanilla's smoothness quickly arrives to harmonize everything. It possesses a certain richness and a chewy texture, with each chew revealing more oak and spice. In summary, this is very direct and quite delicious. It represents exceptional value at $40 for a 7-year-old Old Grand-Dad and is not to be overlooked. The finish is of medium length, with oak and spice lingering, eventually fading to slight hints of fruitiness and dark chocolate.
It falls short when compared to other fine whiskeys. The moderate aging provides a pleasant oak foundation, with sweet notes and baking spices, perhaps even nuts, blended in. The Elijah Craig PGA edition tasted sour and cheap in contrast.
Smells like ethanol, dried fruit such as apricot, and vanilla. Tastes like dried apricot, vanilla, a hint of nuts, sweet, and spicy. It resembles a whisky sour cocktail.
A welcome addition to the Old Grand Dad lineup! Mint and vibrant fruits on the nose that persist onto the palate. A good deal!
