The history of Navy Strength gin is another part of the compelling and conflict-ridden story of gin itself. We owe the British Navy a debt of gratitude, not just for Navy Strength gin, but for shaping gin into what it is today. The Royal British Navy undoubtedly played a crucial role in the creation, consumption, and widespread popularity of gin. The use of exotic spices in gin was facilitated by imports from Africa and Asia. Gin's global spread is thanks to sailors reaching new cities and continents. We've all heard about the rum rations in the navy. Less known is that while enlisted men received rum, Royal Navy officers drank gin. The practice of issuing alcohol rations in the navy began around the 16th century, starting with beer and sometimes wine, eventually progressing to rum and gin. The Royal Navy discontinued issuing alcohol rations in 1970, but the Royal New Zealand Navy continued the practice until 1990. Navy Strength offers a nod to traditional naval gin, with hints of tropical fruit and floral notes, complemented by a crisp, palate-warming spiciness. Its alcohol content is slightly lower than the traditional standard (54%). The minimum required alcohol content is 57.17%, but Brazilian regulations limit spirits to a maximum of 54% ABV. The alcohol is well-integrated into the recipe, resulting in a smooth mouthfeel that makes this volume almost unnoticeable.
