Hayman's Royal Dock Navy-Strength Gin

This is a superb spirit when you can locate it. I have sampled the Old Tom Spirit from Haymans and this is a considerably superior option in my honest judgment. It possesses a much better body and the botanicals are more prominent in cocktails than the Old Tom. Initially, I detected pine and coriander on the nose with some citrus. The body is a delightful citrus blend with some deeper spices concluding the sip. However, this is a Navy Strength Spirit; if you prepare drinks at standard proportions like 3 to 1 for a Martini, 2 to 1 for a Gin and Tonic, or 2 to 1 for a Gimlet, it will be too potent. I prepared a Vesper once with this and my ears started ringing on the second sip. But it is worthwhile. The flavors are incredibly smooth and the price is excellent but it is not always accessible in SC where I reside. This is a true improvement over the standard Haymans and the Old Tom version. A 114 proof navy strength gin from one of England's oldest distilleries. Sampled neat. Clear with a light haze in the glass and viscous, clinging legs. The nose leads with clear juniper, followed by pine, citrus, and sweet floral notes. It has an oily, coating mouthfeel, with evergreen and deep earthy spices, and a sweet taste. Despite the high proof, there's minimal ethanol burn, maybe a tiny bit, but it's very manageable. The flavors are powerfully balanced yet the mouthfeel is soft, creamy, and rich. The finish is long with tingling spices, evergreen, and nettles. It's sweet, clean, and luscious. I also tried this in a G&T and a Gin Gin Mule with mint. It was wonderful--it holds its own and isn't overpowered. A martini is the next step. I would rank this right alongside my favorites--Plymouth, Sipsmith, and Fords. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find in Utah and nearby areas. The hunt will make it more rewarding.

Impressively good for a low price. It has a bold pine flavor but isn't excessive. As others have noted, it's zesty and fruity, and very sippable at 114 proof. No particularly unique flavors, perhaps a unusually strong citrus note, but executed well.

While my palate isn't highly developed, this gin really appeals to me. It has spice, juniper, and a slightly viscous texture. Excellent neat; I'm eager to try it in a gin and tonic.

It's definitely navy strength but surprisingly smooth. I find it quite enjoyable when consumed straight with lemon.
