Mount Gay Silver Rum

Nose: Gentle citrus (lemon), faint herbal/grassy notes, subtle hints of banana and coconut. It presents a light, clean aroma with a mellow character, and any prominent alcohol smell is well concealed. Palate: The initial taste is quite restrained, featuring a surprisingly fruity dried date flavor and a pleasant, smooth texture. It's sweet, but not excessively so, and becomes drier as it progresses. First, a butterscotch taste emerges, followed later by caramel, vanilla, and molasses. Finish: Brief. Mild citrus and a light touch of brown sugar. This is not a complex spirit, but considering the price, that's not unexpected. It's a very agreeable, clean, medium-bodied white rum with a balanced profile that is neither too sweet nor too dry. If you particularly dislike overly sweet white rum, this would be a suitable option for mixed drinks. It offers good value and works well in cocktails, possessing just enough character. Having now sampled most of the white rums in this price range (some of which are more like vodka than rum), this is the one I'd suggest as an affordable mixer. I also surprised myself with this. While writing this review, my glass suddenly became empty, and I realized I had been enjoying it straight as a sipping rum. That fact alone should elevate it to an above-average rating. Few white rums stand up well enough to drink neat, but Mount Gay silver is one that does. It's also fairly inexpensive, and while not a Rhum Agricole, its flavor is quite similar. Banana and tropical fruit are on the nose. The palate is grassy, reminiscent of Rhum Agricole, with a good amount of spice. The finish is rather brief, with just a minor burn as it goes down. If I hadn't known what it was, I might have mistaken it for Barbancourt, as their taste profiles are very alike from my memory. I still prefer Barbancourt slightly, but they are very comparable. I'd suggest this white rum, though not as highly as Privateer, Havana Club, or Barbancourt.

Clear, unaged rum with hints of rubbing alcohol, banana, and grapefruit. The second taste is juicy, with notes of caramel, butterscotch, and citrus peel. Works well as a mixer for a Mojito.

A light white rum with a hint of sweetness. Flavors of citrus, tropical fruit, and spice are present. It's not the silkiest rum, but it doesn't burn. Found for $20 in Ontario.
