About this bottle

Unlike his single-varietal mezcals, this particular bottling by Tío Rey is crafted from a mix of agaves at their peak ripeness, meaning the composition varies with each batch. This edition features Espadín (62%), Coyote (28%), and Mexicano (10%) agaves distilled in his signature clay pot still.

Tyrell Valencia 4.0

Distilled in May 2019. Composed of 52% Tepeztate, 35% Tobala, and 13% Espadin. Alcohol content is 51.5%. The cork has an aroma reminiscent of Islay Scotch. The nose presents a complex blend of smoky, sweet, and sour funk. The initial sip has a spicy, peppery quality with a hint of Goodyear tire. Smoke lingers on the tongue for a long finish. Subsequent tastes diminish the new tire notes, revealing more sweetness and subtle jungle fruit nuances. It is certainly a complex, skillfully made Mezcal.

Evangeline Martinez 3.5

Lot S-01/08-ECBB-17. On the nose: notes of clay, butter, and cinnamon banana. The taste profile includes a creamy mouthfeel leading to warm tingles that spread throughout the mouth. Subtle hints of sea salt, soft leather, and pine are present. This will be an excellent winter mezcal for sipping by the fire.

Lane Altamirano 4.3

More biting than cuentacuentos (coyote), less biting than Nuestra Soledad Sta. Ma. Zoquitlan. The flavors are layered well, along with the harshness. A stimulating mezcal!

Courtney Tejeda 5.0

Five stars for Lot S-01-CME-16, composed of 78% Coyote/18% Espadin/4% Mexicano; at 52% ABV. It delivers warm, bright, dry spices and tingles on the tongue.

Terrie Holt 5.0

Intensely smoky and unique, a small quantity suffices. Sampled at a gathering alongside a cigar.

Cash Gordon 5.0

A delightful mezcal. Its subtle flavor gets lost in mixed drinks and is best appreciated on its own.
