The aroma is very vegetal, full of bell peppers and chilis. The palate presents an intriguing mix of earth, sweet roasted bell peppers, and savory, spicy chilis. I've never encountered a drink quite like this, but it's very interesting. It leaves a lingering numbing sensation. It's quite captivating to sip, but I don't see it as a regular go-to. As I continue drinking, the earthiness intensifies. Some acrid vegetal notes persist, making it more drying. Unfortunately, this rapid shift to the less pleasant aspects of mezcal brings out that unpleasant alcohol flavor alongside the earth, and the entire experience devolves into a muddled mess. A bit of cinnamon manages to hold on, but it's not very enjoyable after the initial few sips. The herbal notes eventually return, balancing the earthiness, but at that point, it tastes medicinal. It's not overwhelming, but it leans into areas I dislike. That final hint of sweetness doesn't vanish, though, and small complex elements do reappear.

About this bottle
This mezcal, introduced in the summer of 2015, is produced using 100% agave cupreata, also known as papalote. The agaves are harvested from the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range and distilled in Mazatlán, Guerrero. Natural fermentation occurs in open pine vats, followed by a double distillation in a copper pot-still. This unaged spirit is bottled at 86 proof.

Bottled in 2021. Spring Lote: 7 Nose: vegetal, lightly cooked agave, citrus/bright Taste: light acetone, rich vegetal flavor like a pepper…definitely herbal with notes of mineral and earth. Not much smoke. Definitely a bright mezcal. Feel: soft, kind of watery viscosity. Maybe even a little salty feeling. Overall great flavor and at a great price point. I bought this to expand my collection so I would have a cupreata.
Like most of this brand's mezcales, this one is excessively smoky (as if engineered for focus groups of bartenders) while lacking in other aspects... even at 43%, it's still well below the alcohol percentage that allows for more complex flavors to develop in the spirit.
Sweet agave aromas with citrus on the nose. The palate offers agave, lime, and a dusty smoke. A nice sweet burn on the finish. This is my third mezcal, and it's easily the best I've tried. The wild agave is a novel addition to the mezcal scene.
Really good; it's smoky and packed with agave taste.
Unusual, complex, earthy, and somewhat raw.
