This Melicana originates from the distillery in Bom Despacho, Minas Gerais. It's quite intriguing, as the beverage is officially recognized by Brazil's regulatory body. The back label states it's distilled from "fermented must of pure bee honey" (meaning no sugar cane was used). Marketed as "Aguardente de Mel" (a type of honey brandy), the bottle retails for around one hundred dollars (a shot is $5). Upon reviewing Brazilian regulations, the classification of this drink is unusual. Standard categories for distillates and spirits are based on plant-based products (like sugarcane, molasses, fruits, grains), while honey is of animal origin. The Brazilian government's approach to authorizing the production and sale of this alcoholic drink involves specific approval, contingent on identity and quality standards, as well as analysis and clearance from the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. This ministry reserves the right to reject or revoke any registration. The product must contain raw materials of vegetable, animal, or mineral origin that contribute to its sensory profile. Tasting notes: Amber hue, aromatic, with notes of honey, jammy fruit, vanilla, noticeable sweetness, and a lasting finish.
