Marie Brizard Advocaat

Appearance: Custard yellow. Aroma: Vanilla-scented supermarket custard, prepared from powder. Flavor and Texture: Vanilla custard and neutral spirit. The texture is rich and thick. Marie Brizard is a major French producer and importer of common liqueurs and syrups. Sadly, this advocaat isn't very good, though I've had worse. The label indicates it's actually produced in Poland, likely bottled under license by Polmos Slaska. That label uses vodka as the base spirit, which I can definitely detect here. Like most lower-tier advocaats, it has an aroma and flavor strongly resembling vanilla custard made from powder, or the type of pre-made custard found in cartons in the refrigerated section of the supermarket. This isn't unpleasant; in fact, I quite like that style of custard. However, premium brands are like authentic homemade egg custard using fresh components. The texture is also somewhat thin and floury, with thickeners contributing to its body. It contains real eggs, but they are powdered, not fresh, which significantly alters the texture, necessitating the addition of corn starch and other ingredients. We bought this on impulse last weekend when Mrs. suddenly developed an overwhelming craving for a Fluffy Duck. While the lady's wishes are granted, it was barely adequate for the purpose. If you're seeking advocaat, ensure it includes fresh egg yolks and vanilla in a brandy base – that's the genuine article.
