Aquavit tasting, December 17, 2022, aquavit #5 Nose: Orange liqueur, caramel, vanilla, apricot, and oak. Palate: A sweet initial taste with vanilla, caramel, and light baking spices. This develops into more intense spicy notes as oak tannins become more prominent, yet the palate remains well-integrated and balanced. There's a dark fruit note, likely from the barrels, and also a trace of barrel char. Finish: Medium/long. Lingering sweetness balanced by oak tannin and spice notes. This was the most potent spirit in the selection and the only one showing signs of significant barrel maturation and age. I believe it's a mix of different aging processes, with some components being 5 years old, which is longer than most aquavit. The caraway and anise notes seemed more subdued and restrained here, with a greater emphasis on the barrel. It was interesting and a favorite for a couple of people at the tasting, but some palates might find it challenging. Of all the aquavits in the selection, this was the one I truly wanted to try with food. I think it would pair excellently with strong smoked meats or preserved fish, but perhaps as a digestif rather than an accompaniment. "Above Average": 82/100 (3.25 stars)

A fine, full-bodied Aquavit imported from Norway. It has a spirited aroma with notes of anise and caraway. The flavor profile features a distinct hit of black licorice/anise, complemented by oak and a subtle cherry-like fruitiness. There's a slight smoky warmth at the end. Certainly full of character.
