Linkwood 15 Year Distillery Labels (Gordon & MacPhail)

Nose: Intensely malty and oaky, with notes of old leather, fresh oatmeal cookies, orange oil, toffee, and nuts. It becomes richer and spicier as it opens, maintaining balance. Water reveals light honey and floral hints. Palate: A sweet malt and cereal arrival with peppery spice and dark chocolate. It develops into a maltier profile with raisins, dates, figs, treacle, and vanilla. The texture is oily and rich, coating the mouth with subtle oaky spice. Finish: Medium to long, warming, sweet cereal, and subtly chewy. A classic, dry Speyside sherry nose, characterized by oaky influence from tannins rather than an overwhelming fruity sweetness. The palate is fundamentally rich and dry, enveloped by a semi-sweet, leathery sherry. Adding a little water softens the palate, introducing a touch of sweetness to balance the dryness without significantly altering the profile; a slight bitterness emerges late. This is a delightful dram, a characterful and traditional malt. Despite its northern Speyside origin, it evokes west-coast whiskies like Ben Nevis, Oban, or Hazelburn. This bottling is a consistent contract release from Gordon & MacPhail. Highly recommended; I've purchased a bottle after sampling. If this retailed for $70 or less, I would have few complaints, but at $100, the quality simply isn't there, in my humble opinion. Make no mistake, it's good, but I know I can get something better for $100. It's a lighter style, almost a dessert malt, but without excessive sweetness. The semi-sweet, spicy sherry notes are complemented by savory, robust old leather and woodspice aromas. It has buttery spicy caramel, graham crackers, honey, minerals, cardamom, and a hint of ginger. A creaminess adds to its complexity. It is well-balanced. I didn't detect any signature strawberry notes until about two months after opening. Some dried fruits are present, and the sherry influence is noticeable without being overpowering like wine, which is a positive. It has a syrupy mouthfeel, despite the thin, broken legs. At $70 or less, I'd rate it a 4.25 and would repurchase it periodically, but for $100, I can find much better options. I revised my review and score after allowing it considerably more time to breathe... waiting this long to fully appreciate it was quite irritating. The high price point unfortunately prevented a higher score, given that I do enjoy it and that natural strawberry note is rather distinctive.

My second dram from this independent bottler, a Linkwood 15yo, exceeded my expectations, and after two of their drams, I'm starting to think they are a great independent bottler. On the nose: Ginger Cinnamon Spicy aroma Fresh woodland Lemon Extremely spicy on the nose, the most intense spice I've experienced. Chocolate On the palate: Starts very sweet, Chocolate toffee; then an oaky character, finishing with a spicy English sauce sensation. Fascinatingly evolves with each sip, complex. Finish: Long with ginger spice and pepper. Delightful. Well-rounded.

Sherry cask influence is fragrant on the nose, with notes of raisins and Christmas cake. The palate presents brown sugar, though it's not as full-bodied as anticipated, it still has an oily texture. A slightly off-putting sour note appears in the taste and blends into the finish, which also includes a modest white pepper and pleasant bitter tannins. The aroma is the highlight, but the palate improves with time.

Nose: Fruity with sweet nectarine, yellow fruit jam, and subtle sherry. Taste: Hints of loose tea, chamomile, light grass, dried hay, and delicate sherry berries. Finish: Light and warming, offering mild dried grass and sugary fruit jam without a distinct punch.
