Kooper Family Rye

I had not encountered this rye before and decided to try it at a bar. I drank it neat in a glencairn glass. The nose was quite pleasant, offering sweetness with honey, spice, and lemon – overall, very enjoyable. The palate delivered the expected rye spice, transitioning to flavors of honey and tea. I appreciate tea, and this reminded me of it significantly. The finish was not excessively long, featuring more notes of honey and peppery tea – an unusual combination. It lacked complexity but was still enjoyable. There was minimal heat (given its 90 proof), and I genuinely enjoyed this glass. The serving cost $9, so my expectations were modest. Overall, I would drink this again.

The aroma starts subtly and darkly sweet with a hint of spice, then becomes more bready as it develops, bringing a touch of copper and dried fruits. The palate picks up a hint of pie crust as it opens, but maintains that spicy, citrusy, oaky character you'd want in a good rye – it's not overpowering, but it's not subtle either. The finish features the most oak with a softly sweet and spicy profile playing through.

Another rye that would be acceptable if it were cheaper. However, at $45, there are better choices available. It's good to sample products from small local distilleries. But I was ready for this one to be finished. Not remarkable.

The aroma has notes of Skittles, oak, vanilla, caramel, white cake, and icing. The palate is sweet with vanilla, cake, icing, spicy rye, and oak. The finish is somewhat long.

Quite pleasant and flavorful. Excellent taste profile.
