About this bottle
Produced at the Anchor Distilling Company in San Francisco, the 18th Century Style Whiskey is composed entirely of rye. It matures for 2 years and 6 months in toasted, rather than charred, oak barrels, utilizing both new and used vessels, which means it is not classified as a straight rye or a standard American rye whiskey. Given that the rye is malted and the product is distilled at a single facility, it qualifies as a single malt whiskey.

This is an authentic and distinctive interpretation of a traditional frontier malted rye. Unlike many other distilleries that are merely putting on a show in a superficial way.
This is well-made historical fiction, similar to "Gates of Fire."
The color is light, the nose and palate are mild yet robust. Rugged and genuine, an honestly underappreciated rye and a new rarity.

This whiskey has a light golden hue with thin viscous legs.
The nose is herbal and green and complex with notes of cinnamon toast, basil, oregano, Italian seasoning, green pine, wood freshly placed on a fire, dry straw, sawdust, and strangely enough, Play-Doh.
The palate has an oily mouthfeel with notes of milk chocolate, cinnamon, rye spice, fennel, and melted butter.
The finish is long with citrus and spice, concluding the experience. Cheers!

After tasting this, a spectral figure appeared and advised me to pursue a more productive life path. My attempt to discuss economic shifts was cut short as they consumed my drink. They then gave a predatory glance toward our server before vanishing in a smoky haze. Awarded 4 stars.

Given the barrel conditions, this spirit lacks the profiles I favor. It presents as quite herbal/grassy, and the heat from the spice is intense, as anticipated from such an immature rye. I'm uncertain about the final taste, but it evokes the impression of very young and extremely inexpensive, lightly peated Scotch.

Tastes like an orange liqueur to me. Anchor Steam is my preferred brewery so I feel somewhat disappointed. It barely tastes like a whiskey. Distinctive and unusual for sure. Excessively herbal and simply not my preference. Will not buy this bottle again.
