I was surprised by how much I liked this. Aroma: freshly cut hay, rye bread, herbs, freshly ground black pepper, with subtle hints of caramel and vanilla. Taste: initially resembles a typical rye with herbs and a bit of peppery spice upfront, plus some oak, vanilla, and caramel. Then, a malty character emerges as a background element, reminiscent of single malt whisky. Finish: the caramel, oak, vanilla, and malty notes disappear rather quickly, while the rye's grassy notes and pepper spice linger. I find this to be a very well-balanced and well-blended whiskey. If you dislike the grassy/herbal/spicy characteristics of rye, this isn't for you. If the unique character of single and blended malts is unappealing, you might not enjoy this. However, if you appreciate spirits like George Dickel Rye or Bulleit Rye, and also enjoy Glenmorangie 10 or Monkey Shoulder, you will likely find this very pleasing. I believe it could be exceptional with a slightly higher proof and a bit more aging.

About this bottle
Kinsey, a revived Pennsylvania brand, is now bottled by New Liberty Distillery in Philadelphia. This rye is crafted to reflect 19th-century Pennsylvania whiskey and is made using three distinct mash bills: one with 95% rye and 5% barley malt; another with 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% barley malt; and a third with 51% rye and 49% barley malt. The whiskey has matured in new, charred American white oak for a minimum of 4 years and is bottled at 86 proof.

Appearance: Light Amber Nose: Savory spices, dark chocolate, brown sugar, coffee, oak, and salted caramel. Taste: Peppery, mint, dry, orange zest, and dark chocolate. Finish: Lingering spice, mint, sweetness diminishes, and oak.
Intensely spicy, which is appreciated, with a subtle vanilla aroma. Excellent enjoyed straight or with a splash of seltzer.
Ideal for Rye cocktails. The spice is robust but not overwhelming. Smoother than anticipated.
Sweetness upfront, with minimal burn. Not bad for a spirit from a newer distillery.
Molasses and rye sweetness. It's enjoyable, but I'm uncertain if I desire another taste.
