Glenmorangie Director of Whisky Creation Dr. Bill Lumsden conceived A Tale of Tokyo following his trips to the city. This single malt whisky incorporates spirit that spent time in rare Japanese Mizunara oak casks, mingled with whisky aged in both sherry and bourbon casks. It is bottled at 46% ABV. Japanese artist Yamaguchi Akira designed the packaging and label for this limited edition release, which became available on September 28, 2023. (SRP $109.99)

Nose: Dusty cocoa notes are present, with clear hints of green apple and lemon zest. A subtle earthy, fruity sherry character emerges. Oak becomes more pronounced as it sits. Palate: The spicy Mizunara oak is quite apparent. Flavors of apple, pepper, and a gentle sherry note. It's woody, citrusy, and fruity. A mild vanilla creaminess is detected, along with malt. Finish: Fruity, woody, and pleasantly warming.
Right away, there's a lot of butterscotch and caramel. Also, many buttery and vegetable notes. It's smooth, yet the butterscotch is prominent enough to be memorable. As it rests, an almost overripe plum flavor emerges on the finish. Nutty notes also reappear.
The aroma is herbal, minty, and spicy from the mizunara, yet also sweet, like lemon meringue pie, vanilla, and oranges. On the palate, the mizunara is clearly noticeable, with spicy and resinous notes, along with white pepper, sour cherry, mint, bitter orange, and fennel.
Fruit and floral notes on the nose, with rich malt reminiscent of caramel and hints of spices.
Bourbon's presence is noticeable toward the finish; it could benefit from aging.
