GlenDronach Master Vintage 1993 25 Year

Glendronach is a paradise for whisky enthusiasts. Anyone who has sampled anything from this distillery has adored it. I visited the distillery and had two choices for my wallet: either the 26-year-old hand-filled bottle or the 1993, 25-year-old Master Vintage. I selected the first one (and it was a great choice), but two days later, I found this bottle at a restaurant in the Scotch Whisky Museum in Edinburgh and tasted it. As usual, it's a good whisky, but I believe the core expressions, the 18 and 21-year-olds, are superior. Well... I consider those two to be my all-time favorites, so I might be prejudiced. This beauty is 48.2% ABV and has a chestnut hue. On the nose, it is at its weakest, although it doesn't feel weak at all. Glazed pork, tobacco, vanilla; sherry notes take time to emerge. Coffee, toffee, orange caramel, and chocolate. It largely has the aroma profile of a 15-year-old Glendronach. On the palate, figs, sweet chocolate, cherries, milk powder, and dulce de leche. Beautiful. The aftertaste consists of three notes, but they are very pleasant: tobacco - chocolate - pepper. Overall, this is a fantastic dram, but it is extremely expensive for what it is. It costs £275, which is about $350, and for that price, you could buy two, or maybe three (if you're lucky) bottles of Glendronach 18-year-old. My rating is 91 out of 100.

Glendronach is my preferred sherried whisky, but I must admit this is not my favorite Glendronach. A common observation with aged spirits is that rarity comes at a cost, and satisfaction is not guaranteed. To be clear, I am not claiming this is a poor whisky. It is an exceptionally crafted expression that showcases various aspects of the distillery's remarkable barrel selection. Unlike the dessert-like offerings in the standard range, such as the cherry compote of the delightful 12-year-old (which surpasses Macallan) and the superb 18-year-old (Macallan again, really?), this spirit is dry and almost savory. Nutty notes are prominent: bitter walnut, almond and amaretto, with creamy cashew. If I had tasted it without knowing its age, I would not have guessed it was over 20 years old, as some grassy or herbal notes are reminiscent of younger spirits. There are some pleasantly bitter elements, like cocoa or coffee, but there are slightly too many for ideal harmony.

Color: violin brown, rosin Nose: black pepper, dark fruit, mellow figs, yellow to green apple, Opening: subtle effect on the lips and tongue, red and dark berries, the bitterness of cracked black pepper Midpalate: darker fruits, flavors of oxidized fruit, and the beginning of a tingling mouthfeel from sherry spice Finish: thick honey sweetness and a lingering sherry spice that stays with you for minutes to half an hour after the drink. A beautiful pour from the bottle, from its appearance to half an hour later. Not nearly as intense as the ALLARDICE, but a slower build and less sugary progression. Even with large sips, the drink is initially subdued but builds at a moderate pace. With added water, the honeyed characteristics and floral aromas appear but are secondary to the sherry's presence.

The Glendronach Master Vintage 1993 spent 25 years maturing in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks. It contains no added coloring and is non-chill-filtered. Bottled at 48.2% ABV. Color: Amber Brown Nose: Wonderful hints of dark chocolate, cocoa, hazelnut, almonds, oak, cherries, marzipan, coffee, and sherry. Palate: Strong notes of cocoa, chocolate, nuts (almonds), a touch of vanilla, oak, wood, oily texture, and raisins emerge. Finish: Slightly dry but pleasantly medium to long, full of more cocoa, oak, toffee, and a faint hint of cinnamon spice.

A rich, full aroma emerges from the glass, carrying a weight from complex, darkly sweet notes. The palate is equally substantial and full, but with more intricate fruity flavors and hints of oak. The finish also comes through darkly and lingers much longer than anticipated, yet still not long enough.
